New domains should give Group NBT the .xxx factor

THERE aren’t many technology companies around that survived the dotcom bust 10 years ago – but Group NBT is one of them. Yesterday, the business tabled an excellent set of numbers, despite operating in markets which it described as “challenging”. Founded in 1995, the company provides domain names and internet-related services to major corporations. NBT boasts companies such as British Airways, The New Statesman and Centrica among the clients for which it hosts web operations. …
Earlier this year a new domain name – “.co” – was made available to buy. The domain was actually assigned to Columbia, but the country decided to rent it out to businesses because .co is a common mis-type of “.com” – and in the Western world it is easily recognised as a shortening of “company”. Sales have been swift.
Also, later this year the Internet Corporation for Assigned names and Numbers (ICANN), which is responsible for assigning domain names, is expected to approve a new raft of suffixes for the internet. These will include “.xxx”, “.eco” and “.gay” – as well as for cities such as “.london” and “.paris”. Companies will also be able to have their own name as a suffix later this year. …
