Since the family is the primary institution whereby the Dominion Covenant is to be extended, laws were given to protect the property of families. The Jubilee laws of Leviticus 25 insured a family that it would always have land so that dominion could be exercised. Property could not be taxed. Even the father could not dispossess his family from the land because of carelessness, poor stewardship, or debt. Fathers were instructed to lay up an inheritance for their children so that the work of dominion under God could continue.

Donna Blackburn is a confident woman. When Xtra spoke to her before the municipal elections, she was not shy about her chances of being elected onto the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB). Her first words were, “I will be elected.” Blackburn was right. She won more than 50 percent of the votes in becoming school board trustee for Zone Three, the Barrhaven/Knoxdale-Merivale area. She beat her closest rival, Allan Halfper, by a 12-point spread.

Introduction

A large number of recent American presidents and high government officials have openly supported creationism/Intelligent Design, or at least have expressed the view that students and teachers have the right to question Darwinism. In the last century alone, presidents who spoke openly of their doubts about Darwinism include Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. A few of the many “on the record” statements of presidential support of their belief in creationism are reviewed below. Other statements by high level government officials were also noted.

A heterosexual British couple is challenging the law on civil partnerships after an application was turned down. At present, only gay couples are eligible. Ian Goggin, 21, and Kristin Skarsholt, 22, who are Quakers and live in Bristol, western England, said they wanted the security and stability of a legal commitment without having to get married, the BBC reported. They are among eight couples – four heterosexual, four gay – taking their case to the courts, arguing the law is discriminatory.
