“You may find this both interesting and amusing: on Thursday May 3 the Legislature debated the ‘Protection of Elephants Act’ (I kid you not) which was introduced as a Private Members Bill. Well intentioned as it may seem, instead of debating strategies for dealing with the economy, job creation and spending restraint, we recognized and enshrined into law ‘Nurses’ week’, ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’, ‘International Day of the Midwife’ and recognize May as both Jewish and Asian Heritage month.”

Grand Juries are Democracies’ Grand Idea

Successive governments through the years have gradually and incrementally neutered the individual’s ability to hold governments accountable or to punish those who break trust with the electorate. The abolition of grand juries was one of the steps which took power away from the people. It is time to re-introduce grand juries into the Ontario justice system, and provide people with a most essential democratic tool, second only to our right to vote.

Liberty lovers meet their match

Peter Jaworski wasn’t born in the cradle of freedom, but his mother says she hid illegal, anti-Soviet pamphlets in his baby carriage, covertly passing them out to fellow dissidents on the streets of Wroclaw, Poland. When local police sent an order to his father to report to them for unspecified reasons, the family used a permit to travel to Germany and fled, eventually settling in Orono, Ont.
