I remember cringing when the Waterloo School Superintendent, Gregg Bereznick insisted that school personnel were in fact “co-parents.” The context for such “fatal attraction” level hubris was in connection with the strip searching of a father and apprehension of his children after his school authorities eyeballed his daughter’s school drawing of a gun. The way things are trending, we might find ourselves revelling in the nostalgia of a day when parents still enjoyed coequal status with these public school revolutionaries. Read more... On a recent CBC podcast of “The Current” with Anna Maria Tremonti, I listened to her rabid attack on home-schoolers, followed by a CBC-produced “skit” that further exposed this identifiable group to hatred and contempt.
Ms. Tremonti was conducting “interviews” (heavily weighted with her own bias) around the recent announcement that Alberta had agreed to drop the contentious inclusion of Human Rights legislation in its approach to home-schooling in the province. Justin Trudeau is not being honest when he tries to hide behind an imaginary “Conservative smear campaign”. Remarks he made in 2010 are coming back to haunt him. In those remarks, he blamed Albertans for some of the country’s woes. “Canada isn’t doing well right now because it’s Albertans who control our community and socio-democratic agenda. It doesn’t work,” he said. He followed that up by agreeing with the following opinion: “Canada is better served when there are more Quebecers in charge than Albertans”. Read more... I need to make a confession. I regret to tell you that I misjudged the American voting public. I should have recalled that truism attributed to H.L. Mencken that, “no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public.” In this instance, the U.S. is about to go broke because a party has accurately discerned the greed of the majority of its citizenry. The year was 2008. Prime Minister Harper and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty were running for re-election. During the campaign, Mr. Harper said at least 5 times that the Canadian government, under his leadership would not go into deficit. Here were some of his campaign promises:
• “We’ll never go back into deficit” (Oct. 14, 2008 Toronto Star commentary) Read more... (493 words, estimated 1:58 mins reading time)

As wave after wave of disappointment washed over me in the aftermath of Tuesday’s US vote, I was compelled to consider: how did Barack Obama recover from his record and return to Washington as the re-elected President of the United States? Article after article has been churned out by conservative writers better known and better connected than me; from the deeply analytical statistics about white males, unmarried women, grateful storm survivors, etc. to the introspective writhings and writings of folks who clearly understand that the church has failed to educate, to inspire and to hold accountable the American voter. Across the Eastern US and Canada, Hurricane Sandy has arrived—in full fury—much as the weathermen said she would. The tracking and predictions of this unbelievable storm have been the main course for major news media for several days and well they should have been. People have been duly warned to gather supplies and to prepare in every way for the winds and water. Although the damage was phenomenal and there has been tragic loss of life, no doubt many people have been spared thanks to the urgency and thoroughness of the preparations and the reporting of the storm’s path and progress. Fishermen know that getting fish to bite can sometimes be a challenge. Besides natural bait, like worms, fish eggs, crayfish, etc., there are a myriad of man-made lures, flies and combinations of ornamented hooks made to deceive fish into believing they are about to enjoy a delicious snack. Just like cheese in a mousetrap or any tempting bait, the illusion of an “easy meal” is just that. As the saying goes, “there’s no free lunch”. Read more...
