“…a Proud Look, a Lying Tongue and Hands that Shed Innocent Blood…”: Rod Taylor

By Rod Taylor

As wave after wave of disappointment washed over me in the aftermath of Tuesday’s US vote, I was compelled to consider: how did Barack Obama recover from his record and return to Washington as the re-elected President of the United States? Article after article has been churned out by conservative writers better known and better connected than me; from the deeply analytical statistics about white males, unmarried women, grateful storm survivors, etc. to the introspective writhings and writings of folks who clearly understand that the church has failed to educate, to inspire and to hold accountable the American voter.

The speculations about Sandy seem nearly impossible to dispute; I admit I worried about the possible impact on voters even as the sea lashed the ports. While Mitt Romney and the President both interrupted their campaigns out of compassion for the storm-battered victims of the East Coast, Mr. Obama was able to campaign from his helicopter…”just by being there”. After all, he is the President. His fly-over with Chris Christie (ironically, the New Jersey Governor who gave such a powerhouse speech for Romney’s nomination) earned him points not just in New Jersey, but across America as the MSM news anchors dutifully (and cheerfully) played and replayed the footage of this very important man showing his concern for his less-fortunate fellow Americans. At this point, polls seem almost ludicrous to repeat but those who have studied this story offer an opinion that “If it hadn’t been for Sandy…” the results on Tuesday might have been quite different

Then there’s the Mormon question: Was it asking too much to expect evangelical Christians (whom Romney badly needed to win) to vote for a man that many consider a member of a cult? Sure, in 1960, JFK took the nation by storm as the first Catholic to win the White House but Mormonism carries a deeper and more distinct set of beliefs, seemingly irreconcilable with both Catholicism and Protestantism. As the campaign progressed and the field of early nominees dwindled, folks who would never have picked Romney as their champion in the primaries became his erstwhile supporters during the final weeks. But not all. An indeterminate number of voters who would have worked the polls for Santorum or Ron Paul may have just stayed home because they didn’t want to compromise their faith by helping the first Mormon to the highest office in the land. Some exit polls showed as many as 26% of evangelical Christians voted for Obama. How is that not compromising your faith? To intentionally support the man who displays such arrogance, who so frequently misrepresents the truth and who—without restraint—has pursued the most aggressive, pro-abortion policies in American history…this astounds me that a Bible-believing Christian could do that without feeling the pangs of conscience.

Whatever the myriad of reasons why this one or that one may not have voted at all or may have actually voted against Romney, still the fact remains that slightly more than 50% of Americans chose the man who has waged war on Catholics, added $5 trillion in debt to America’s balance sheet and weakened America’s military. And they think they’ve done the right thing. Time will prove them wrong but the media which informed their opinions over the past four years will no doubt continue to misinform them going forward and will attribute America’s collapse to a pre-existing condition. It reminds me of Jeremiah’s lament: “the prophets prophesy falsely…and my people love to have it so…”

May we be spared from self-deception. May we learn to choose the good and refuse the evil. May we not hold up for honour the deceivers of the people: men with a proud look, a lying tongue and hands that shed innocent blood. America is drenched in blood today from the millions of aborted babies she has cast out. Sandy’s devastation is perhaps a judgment in itself; if her impact extended to the results of Tuesday’s election, her aftermath will be worse than the full force of her winds and waves; it will be measured in many more millions of lives lost by abortion and yet more trillions of dollars squandered by this man that Americans have once again chosen to rule over them.
