U of O students protest proposed tuition hikes
By Justin Sadler, The Ottawa Sun
With recommended hikes of 4% for returning students and up to 8% in increases for medicine, management, and law students on the table, the university’s board of governors approved the fee hikes for the 2010-11 academic year despite protestations from the almost 60 students in attendance. “Students are incredibly concerned that the university is demanding that we all pay 5% more in tuition fees while they cut 5% of the budget, which will result in a more expensive education of lower quality,” said Seamus Wolfe, president of the university’s student federation.
Undergraduate tuition in 2009-10 was about $5,600 for arts, health and social sciences. Law school cost about $12,000 while medicine was about $17,000. The increases average out to about 4.3% - or about $200 per student – across the board, said the university’s vice-president of resources Victor Simon. Cumulatively, however, the hike tops out at the 5% maximum increase allowed by the province. It represents roughly $8 million in additional revenue, which will be used to reduce the university’s $33-million deficit.
