Canadian socialists support citizens arrest

Two Members of Parliament have introduce Private Members’ Bills to strengthen the right to make citizens’ arrests. These bills were introduced by NDP MP Olivia Chow, wife of NDP leader Jack Layton (C-565), and Liberal MP Joe Volpe (C-547).

The summary provided for both these bills, which are almost identical, is: “This enactment amends the Criminal Code to give the owner or person in lawful possession of property the power to arrest without warrant a person he finds committing, or he believes has committed, a criminal offence on or in relation to that property.”

Such proposals are very pertinent to those watching the McGuinty government witchhunt in Toronto of a Chinese produce store owner who is facing charges for holding a thief until the police arrived.

Where are the conservative voices on this issue?
