Woman who has sex with boy honored as ‘Person of Month’: City celebrating rapist teacher to sheer horror of some locals
By Joe Kovacs
An Alabama city is coming under heavy fire from some local residents for celebrating a convicted sex offender – a female teacher who admitted to raping a 15-year-old male student – as its “Person of the Month.”
The controversy involves Pelham, Ala., a city of approximately 21,000 people, which is honoring Emily Morris for promoting a fundraiser at the city’s high school to help battle cancer.
But just five years ago, when she was a resident of Pelham, Morris was arrested on a variety of charges for allegedly having intercourse with a teen boy at Leeds High School where she taught. The state of Alabama has listed her as a sex offender.
Now, the former instructor who avoided a potential 20-year jail sentence by pleading guilty to second-degree rape in exchange for one year behind bars and four years probation, is featured as “Person of the Month” in the June edition of Pelham Magazine, the official publication of the city, which is mailed out to local residents.
“I am stunned that a registered sex offender who is registered in another city was named Pelham Person of the Month,” one outraged resident told WND. “I find it hard to believe that there is not a more deserving candidate. I also find it hard to believe that the city and school system allowed a sex offender to hold an event at a school.”
According to the magazine, Morris served as “ceremonies chairperson and sponsorship co-chair for Relay for Life of North Shelby [County].” Relay for Life is a national program of the American Cancer Society designed to raise money in the fight against cancer. Morris helped organize and publicize a Relay for Life that took place June 11 at Pelham High School, her own alma mater.
The boy was 15 years old. That does NOT qualify her as a pedophile.
Pedophilia refers to a sexual preference for prepubescent children. 15 is NOT prepubescent! We need to get our definitions straight and quit putting labels on people that don’t fit.
Hebephilia refers to a sexual preference for pubescent children. BUT remember, IT MUST BE A “PREFERENCE.”
1. Preferential. These are pedophiles who live their fantasy of having sex with prepubscent children. Their whole life is based in this fact.
2. Situational. These abusers do not have a sexual preference for children. They have sex with child for many reasons including, simple availability, opportunity, curiosity, or a desire to hurt a loved one of the molested child. There are any number of reasons. Their sexual preference however is not children, they prefer adults.
Not all pedophiles are child molesters.
A child molester is an individual who sexually molests children. A pedophile might have a sexual preference for children and fantasize about having sex with them, but if he does not act on that preference or those fantasies, he is not a child molester.
Not all child molesters are pedophiles. A pedophile is an individual who prefers to have sex with prepubescent children.
A person who prefers to have sex with an adult partner may, for any number of reasons, decide to have sex with a child. Such reasons might include simple availability, opportunity, curiosity, or a desire to hurt a loved one of the molested child. The erotic imagery and sexual fantasies of such individuals are not necessarily recurrent, intense, and focused on children; therefore, these people are not pedophiles. They are called situational abusers.
Yes, she probably should have not accepted this but she probably has been totally forgiven. I don’t know but just guessing. This issue is cancer not having sex with a 15 year old. The grape vine loves gossip and this fits that but unfortunately it’s true and not gossip. If this were a man, he would have been given a pass. Go look in the mirror and ponder yourself.
Linda,
Your definitions were strangely devoid of any hint of judgement. That is one of the problems within our society where persons actions are whitewashed by some unfeeling definition. What the woman did was wrong, was judged wrong by society and most people’s ethical beliefs also called it wrong. What are you saying; it is OK what she did because she isn’t a pedophile according to your definition or some online definition of pedophilia? So maybe in your opinion she was deserving of the award?
“Not all pedophiles are child molesters.” Wow, so would you have such people babysit for you? Pedophilia is a horrible disgusting thing which some people engage in for reasons of, WHO CARES! It is evil, period, and if some person who took advantage of a young person is inappropriately labeled as a pedophile, oh well.
