Fairness of a trial must be taken into account: ruling

The Ontario Court of Appeal has ruled that the victim of an alleged sexual assault may not have to remove her niqab while testifying as long as the fairness of a trial is not compromised. In the 3-0 ruling Wednesday, the court upheld an earlier decision by the Superior Court. A lower court had ordered the 32-year-old Muslim woman, identified only as N.S., to remove the traditional veil, which covers most of her face.

Syria bans Islamic veils in universities: Secular regime cracks down on conservative Islam

DAMASCUS – Syria’s Education Ministry has issued a ban on the face-covering Islamic veil from the country’s universities to prevent what it sees as a threat to its secular identity, as similar moves in Europe spark cries of discrimination against Muslims. The Education Ministry issued the ban Sunday, according to a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly.

Three or four interesting news stories have appeared in the past couple of weeks on face coverings; most – but not all – have to do with Islam. Receiving the most coverage in Canada have been a couple of controversies in Quebec. One of the cases in Quebec was where “[a] human rights commission actually made a good decision. Quebec’s human rights commission ruled that niqab-and burka-wearing women must uncover their faces to apply for a medicare card and cannot insist on being served by a woman,” to quote Calgary Herald columnist Licia Corbella.
