I have always thought it unfortunate and unwise that the Opposition feels so compelled to oppose everything proposed by the government, both federally and provincially. Of course, we all know that “holding their feet to the fire” (deemed a solemn responsibility) has more attraction if it also embarrasses the ruling party and gives those in opposition a leg up in the next election. In that sense, it can be expected as par for the course that agreement will be the least likely path chosen by the opposition when new legislation is put forward or issues are raised. Even if perhaps 20,000 people came to Parliament Hill yesterday to proclaim a pro-life Canada, to a great many observers, the apparent rejection and imminent defeat of Motion 312 in the House of Commons would seem to herald the end of the abortion debate in Canada. The motion, a modest proposal at best, is Kitchener Centre MP Stephen Woodworth’s earnest initiative to assess if indeed the fetus is a human being or simply protoplasm and a mere appendage to a woman’s body. These days one need only open the CBC News webpage to find a thorough exposé of the latest alleged skullduggery of the Conservative government (i.e. The “Harper Government” as it is affectionately known by the downstream media.) Yesterday, CBC (the official organ of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition) had a Live! headline about Thomas Mulcair addressing the NDP Caucus on the anniversary of their “historic victory.” (Excuse me? Rising to the status of Official Opposition is certainly an achievement but I thought “victory” would be a word reserved for, er, the victors…like the Conservatives who—deserving or not—won a majority government.)
